Why Coach Sports – Here is Why

It blows my mind to see people blow their shot to make a difference when they coach sports. With the state of the games today and all the problems coaches encounter, you may wonder why anyone would ever want to coach in the first place. That’s a great point as it seems like there are more unfortunate situations at youth sporting events these days than uneventful games. People leave the fields talking about the adults involved more than the kids and the game itself. Well, in my book I give a couple of great reasons why people should coach youth. The reasons came in the form of some letters I received from boyhood teammates.

The first letter:

Your dad was a great leader, coach, and gentleman. I can remember him from Joliet Little League, along with your fastball. Please write about him.

and The second letter:

I read what you post[ed] on here, and I can tell that your passion for sports and drive to help kids has a lot of your dad’s influence in it. What a great man. I remember him with a lot of love and respect.

Those notes still shake me up today, especially because my dad coached the two letter writers over 45 years ago. 45 Years, heck I am glad when my players remember me a couple of weeks from now, let alone 45 years later. The point is, when you coach sports the right way, you can change lives and be remembered for the role model you are capable of being. It’s a great opportunity – do not throw away your shot to make a difference. Rise up, coaches! As always I appreciate it when you share my writing, videos, and books with friends and youth coaches.
