Thursday Throwing Tips – I could Throw All Day – No Lie
There were days when I threw over 2 thousand baseballs, when giving baseball lessons. How did I do it? I was throwing rag balls that weigh a couple of ounces less than regular baseballs weigh.
A lighter weight ball places much less strain on the arm, so it allows one to do it much more frequently.
Why important
When working on the throwing motion and pitching with young players, coaches should use lighter weight balls. Correct throwing mechanics are the same, no matter what ball is used. Because of the diminished arm strain, kids can work on their throwing so much longer without much chance of arm injury. As players’ fundamentals improve, they move to the regulation ball, but must be more cognizant of the number of throws with the heavier ball for the mentioned reason, of course.
