Pressure on youth athletes is at it’s highest level than ever before. It comes from many sources – parents, self, coaches, and peers. Every young player is different as are their circumstances. Wherever the pressure comes from, parents are the ones that must be there for limiting pressure on your athlete. Of course, that is most difficult when it is the parents placing the pressure on kids, especially for those who do not realize they are the problem.
Pressure from whatever source begins with high expectations of one’s ability and goals. Unfortunately, those expectations are beginning at younger ages than ever before. too. It is not uncommon for parents to enroll their kids in competitive and specialized programs at the ages of three, four and five years old. Kids may seem to be fine with it at the start, but after many years of exertion under pressure, they tire by the ages of ten and eleven.
Limiting pressure on your athlete takes awareness and strategies so kids do not burn out from playing before they even reach their teen years.
